Unreached Peoples and Nations: India

“The missionary question is not where are there unbelievers, and then send a missionary there. There are unbelievers everywhere. The missionary question is where are there peoples who don’t have any Christians in them… That’s the missionary question. That’s the question of peoples and nations.” -John Piper

India is among the least evangelized nations in the world, with over five hundred thousand villages still waiting to hear the Gospel for the first time. It is common to meet people who have never heard the name Jesus. In one video filmed in India, a missionary asked a woman, “Do you know Jesus?” She replied, “No, but check in the next village; he may live there.” When one man heard that Jesus healed people of sickness, he went to the preacher and asked if they could bring this doctor named Jesus to his house to heal his wife. They had no idea that Jesus was more than just a healer, but was God in the flesh.

The Indians are mostly Hindus, who believe in reincarnation, and worship over 330 million gods and goddesses. Islam is also a major stronghold in this country. These religions cause much opposition to the Gospel, and hundreds of people groups are entirely unreached by Christianity. One of these is the Kinnaura, which live in northern India in the Kinnaur District.

These people are almost completely isolated from Christian witness. Of the seventy-three thousand Kinnaura, it was reported several years ago that only about one hundred claim some form of Christianity. Do the math, and you realize that this is only 0.13% of the population. They don’t have access to the Bible, since only portions of it have been translated into their language. They are trapped in a strange mixer of Buddhist and Hindu beliefs, deceived by the god of this world.

Sadly, this is the story of millions in Asia. This is the continent that contains over 850 million Hindus, and one billion Buddhists and spirit-worshipers. This is why Gospel Outreach for Asia is centering it focus on these Asian nations, where the name of Christ is unknown. As stated above, India is one of the most unreached of these countries. Thankfully, we have been able to fund the printing of thousands of tracts and New Testaments in this country. Most of these have been produced in South India, and used to reach some of the least evangelized peoples in the world, like the Kinnaura mentioned above. This is because of people just like you have helped us see this come to pass. Please consider joining us today as we work to bring the nations to Christ. 1. Reagan,
Good and sobering post. Sometimes I feel that what I can give is so small, but its coming anyway. Just sent to the native missionaries in China. Bibles and tracts are on the list too.
    Peace+

  2. Thank you for the intel regarding the exact location of some of the least evangelized peoples in India. I am currently church-planting here in Andhra Pradesh, south India, but have always had a desire to work among those who have never even heard of Jesus' Name (unlike those where I currently labor). With this intel, I can travel for roughly $12 up to Kinnaur District in Himachal Pradesh and preach Christ through a translator and begin learning the local dialect. Thank you once again for the invaluable intelligence!
