Zeal

What the true fuel of the missions flame? What should inspire us to reach out to those who do not believe? John Stott makes this statement about what drives us in the work of missions: “The highest of missionary motives is neither obedience to the Great Commission (important as that is), nor love for sinners who are alienated and perishing (strong as that incentive is, especially when we contemplate the wrath of God…), but rather zeal burning and passionate zeal—for the glory of Jesus Christ…. Only one imperialism is Christian…. And that is concern for His Imperial Majesty Jesus Christ, and for the glory of his empire.”

The above quote is given in relation to Romans 1:5. In this verse, the greatest missionary of all time gives us the sum of his calling as a missionary. Paul says: “through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations.” (ESV, emphasis added) It was for His name’s sake! Stott continues in his discussion of the verse: “We should be ‘jealous’…for the honor of his name—troubled when it remains unknown, hurt when it is ignored, indignant when it is blasphemed. And all the time anxious and determined that it shall be given the honor and glory that is due it.”

Are we zealous for God’s glory? Will we stand up for His glory and honor? Most Christian wouldn’t hesitate to claim that they do so; and yet, our lives don’t line up with what we say. If we are truly zealous for the glory of God, why are we still waiting laborers to go into the whole world to share the gospel? Why are so many Christians reluctant to be involved in God’s Kingdom, both at home and abroad?

My challenge to you is that you would live for the glory of God in everything you do. Every person has incredible potential to change the world; be zealous for Christ’s Kingdom and change the world for Him. This is the true heart of missions.
